History of Upper Mustang

The history of Upper Mustang, generally referred to as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," is rich and fascinating. It was once part of Tibet and largely isolated from the rest of Nepal until the 1990s.

Tibetan Buddhism has deeply affected its unique culture, language, and traditions. Historically, Upper Mustang was a kingdom under the rule of the Lama King of Lo-Manthang. Being isolated for years allowed Upper Mustang to preserve its Tibetan heritage almost without any influence from modernity.

Upper Mustang was officially opened to foreign trekkers in 1992; however, due to its restricted status, special permission is required to travel there. This region has long been an essential centre for trade between Nepal and Tibet, and the landscape is peppered with ancient monasteries, caves, and temples, many of which date to the 8th century.

Upper Mustang's history is very affine, given its strategic location along the trade route and strong cultural links to Tibet. It is a fascinating destination that remains unchanged even today and provides glimpses into the life of an unchanged culture for centuries.

Permits Required for Upper Mustang Tour

Special permits are required to travel through Upper Mustang due to its exclusivity in both cultural and ecological significance. These ensure that only approved travellers actually enter the region so that their natural beauty and cultural heritage are preserved.

Following are the main permits required for the Kathmandu to Upper Mustang Tour:

1. Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

The RAP is the most important permit for travellers visiting the Upper Mustang. The Nepali government considers it a restricted zone to preserve its natural and cultural integrity.

This permit is mandatory for all foreign nationals visiting Upper Mustang and can only be received through a registered trekking agency. The RAP allows access to the Mustang region, including areas like Lo-Manthang, Kagbeni, and Muktinath. The permit is usually valid for 10 days, and extensions can be applied for if needed.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The ACAP, or Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, is another vital permit required to visit the Upper Mustang area. Although Upper Mustang is considered a restricted area, it is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area, which was established to protect the natural environment and wildlife.

The ACAP is necessary for entering the broader Annapurna area and is used to contribute toward conservation. This card is easily available at the Tourist Service Center, Kathmandu, or Pokhara.

3. TIMS Card

Though the Upper Mustang does not always have to have a TIMS Card, it is necessary while trekking through other areas of the Annapurna or other parts of Nepal. It is essential to have some information about the trekkers, and it helps the authorities in case of emergencies that may occur during the trips. Your trekking agencies can help you get one if that is required.

How to Obtain Permits For Upper Mustang?

These permits are obtained from a registered trekking agency; you must go through Well Nepal Travels. We will handle all the paperwork, including RAP, ACAP, and the permit. You must attach a copy of your passport, visa, and passport-sized photos during the permit application.

We request our guests apply for permits from our home country before the tour to avoid any hindrances and problems while commencing the tour.

With these permits, you can explore the Upper Mustang region safely and legally while enjoying its pristine landscapes and unique Tibetan culture.

Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Tour

One of Upper Mustang's most important cultural festivals, the Tiji Festival, is held each year in the walled city of Lo-Manthang. According to the local Tibetan Buddhist tradition, it is a three-day gala full of colour that portrays the victory of good over evil.

The festival is also a dedication to the legend of Dorje Jono, a deity believed to have fought off evil powers to save the region from natural calamities and suffering. The Tiji Festival offers travellers a rare opportunity to witness the rich cultural heritage of the Mustang. Traditional Tibetan dances, rituals, and ceremonies performed by local monks in colourful attire highlight the festival.

During the festival, visitors can observe the monastic dances, enjoy local food, and celebrate life and spirituality in this remote part of Nepal.

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Tour is one of the most unforgettable experiences due to the combination of Mustang's beauty and the thrilling experience of witnessing this spiritual and cultural event. According to the Tibetan lunar calendar, it usually falls in May. It offers photographers and cultural enthusiasts an incredible chance to capture the essence of Mustang's ancient traditions.

During this tour, travellers will explore the ancient monasteries, caves, and beautiful landscapes of Lo-Manthang and experience the warmth and hospitality of the local people. Tiji is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the spiritual and cultural life of this remote Tibetan region.

Best Time of the Year for Jeep Tour to Mustang

The best times to visit Upper Mustang by jeep are in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These are the best times of the year for favourable weather and conditions in this far-flung and beautiful region.

Spring happens to be a mild season, with landscapes that are completely lush and green. The skies are clear, offering crystal-clear views of the resplendent Himalayan peaks.

Another season brings flowers into bloom, adding all colours to Mustang's desert-like landscapes. The weather is warm enough without being too hot, which makes for comfortable temperatures on the trail and much less crowding than during the peak months.

Autumn is another peak season for the Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour. The weather remains stable this season, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. It is also one of the finest travel seasons, as most highways are dry and accessible.

Since the region isn't extremely hot, jeeps are preferred to travel over the rugged trails at this time of year. This month coincides with various cultural festivals, including Mustang's unique celebration of cultural happenings.

However, it is better to avoid the summer monsoon months of June to August and winter from December to February due to rain, landslides, and cold temperatures with snow on the roads.

Food or Meal Available During the Upper Mustang Overland Tour

During the Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour, you'll experience a variety of meals that showcase the traditional flavours of Nepal and the Mustang region.

In cities like Pokhara and Kathmandu, you'll find a wider selection of meals, including local Nepali dishes like dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice), momo (dumplings), and sel roti (traditional rice doughnut). These places offer a mix of international and Nepali cuisine, with options for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

As you ascend more into Mustang territory, especially in Lo-Manthang and Kagbeni, the food is traditionally locally sourced. In most places, you'll find tsampa of roasted barley flour, thukpa or noodle soup, and yak meat.

Most of the meals are prepared using locally grown ingredients, and the flavour is influenced by Tibetan culture. Most of the tea houses and guesthouses on the route serve a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, along with fresh bread, potatoes, and vegetables.

Mustang's food is simple but made with love and contains the perfect balance of nutrition and taste to keep you going. You can also enjoy tea, and the local drinks include butter tea, a traditional drink made with tea, butter, and salt, which is widely popular in the high-altitude areas of Nepal.

Travel Insurance for Upper Mustang Overland Tour

We highly recommend taking appropriate and reliable travel insurance for the Upper Mustang Overland Tour to ensure safety and security during the trip. The Mustang region is pretty remote, and though the 4WD jeep is a very comfortable and safe way of travel, accidents, sickness, or other natural causes are always possible.

A comprehensive insurance policy should cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost baggage, and emergency evacuation. It is highly recommended that one select an insurance plan specifically mentioning high-altitude trekking or overland travel, which some standard policies may not allow. In addition, there should be coverage for emergency evacuation from the Mustang region, which is very difficult because of its remote location.

Ensure that the policy also covers delays or changes in travel plans, as weather conditions or road closures can sometimes disrupt transportation. When travelling with a tour company like Well Nepal Travels, they will typically provide guidance on the types of insurance recommended and help you understand what's best suited for the journey.
